Helen is the heroine of Anne Brontë’s novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Helen flees her abusive husband and finds refuge for herself and her young son at Wildfell Hall. A skilled painter, Helen determines to use her artistic skills to support herself and forge a new life. The colourful decorative neckline in this print blends with soft shades of blue, aqua, pink and lilac to make for a design reminiscent of a painter’s palette. The feathers featured in this design are symbolic of Helen’s flight.

Anne Brontë was the author of two classic novels: Agnes Grey, published in 1847 and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, published in 1848. Both of these novels highlight the difficulties women experienced in a patriarchal society, where they had few rights and even fewer options for support. Anne Brontë was a morally conscious individual and her final novel is considered one of the first sustained feminist novels. It seemed only fitting to name our Women’s Community Shelters charity collection after this gifted author.
